Camping in Volcano, Big Island, HI

Stolen from my TripAdvisor review …

We enjoyed Volcano Village Lodge for 3 nights in September.   We chuckled as our Garmin GPS told us to turn on “Roady” (Road E) just before reaching the somewhat remote location.  Upon arrival we were intrigued by the beautifully landscaped gardens and the spacious Hale Manaluna accommodations.

Living in Colorado, we laughed at the fireplace in the corner, wondering why on earth we would need such a thing in Hawaii … we fired it up the next morning.  The comfortable memory foam bed, rustic appearance and 3 walls of windows was the perfect “camping” experience … there is no cable service to the TV, so yes, this is our idea of camping.

Despite the peaceful, relaxing accommodations, our short stay found us traveling to Hilo for a helicopter tour, Kapoho Tide pools to snorkel (most amazing coral we have ever seen), Ahalanui Hot Springs, and of course Volcano National Park to see the majesty of Pele.  We would have liked another day or two here to just relax and enjoy the serenity of the Volcano Village Lodge.  Breakfasts, placed in the refrigerator the night before, were very convenient to eat on your own timeframe.  Typically, breakfast included quiche, fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, nut bread, juice, etc.  Also provided, were a few light snacks to fend off hunger at other times during the day.  Although we knew this was a rain forest, we were not ready for the daily rain … light mostly, but extremely heavy one night.  That said, the Volcano Village Lodge was an excellent, contrasting diversion to our otherwise sunny beach stay in Hawaii.
